Purana Qila

Literally meaning “Old Fort”, Purana Qila is one of the oldest forts in Delhi and an iconic historical site. It dates back to the 16th century, built by the Mughal Emperor Humayun on the site of the ancient city of Indraprastha - mentioned in the Mahabharata. Sprawling across a vast area of two kilometers, the fort’s notable features include its massive walls forming a rectangular perimeter and the three main gateways: the Humayun Darwaza, the Talaqi Darwaza, and the Bara Darwaza. The Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque, within the fort, is one of its most prominent structures, exhibiting exquisite architectural details. The expansive and picturesque grounds, along with the adjacent moat, have become a favored spot for tourists seeking leisurely walks, picnics, and boat rides. A light and sound show is also presented on “The Seven Cities of Delhi” every evening highlighting the evolution of New Delhi from Indraprastha.
