Red Fort

The fortified palace complex of Red Fort or Lal Qila was built in the 17th Century by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Named after its massive red sandstone walls, this fort was built along the banks of River Yamuna and served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. It is widely renowned as the peak of Mughal architecture and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 as part of the Red Fort Complex. Every year the Indian Prime Minister hoists the national flag here on Independence Day. The palace complex is surrounded by lovely gardens and hosts numerous shops offering attractive souvenirs for sale. Tourists can also explore the four museums inside the fort : Heritage Tea House, Diwan-i-Aam, Nahr-i-Bihisht and Rang Mahal. During evenings, the visitors get to discover the history of the fort through an immersive and engaging experience of the light and sound show which is presented in both Hindi as well as English. The timeless allure of Red Fort with centuries of history tells another captivating story of Delhi’s vibrant heritage making it a popular tourist destination.

Travel Tips

  • The entry fee ranges from Rs 35 - Rs 500 per head. For the light and sound show, a separate fee is required.
  • The timings are from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM on all days of the week except Mondays when the complex remains closed.
